Gong Multi-Purpose Hall – Lower Vítkovice, Ostrava

Ostrava

Particularities

The project of the reconversion of a gas container from 1921 located in the industrial Lower Vítkovice area in Ostrava turned this national cultural heritage into a multi-purpose centre with a congress hall and a gallery. In architect Josef Pleskot’s project, the original appearance of the gas container was retained, and the new structure is located inside. The project was implemented in two stages. The first stage involved a stress analysis, cutting holes and reinforcing the steel structures, and raising the bell and stabilising it. The second stage involved the actual construction work. The ground floor comprises the entrance hall, a temporary modern art gallery, refreshments and operational facilities. The first floor houses convertible rooms with a central hall, which is connected to a small stage and a food service gallery. The second floor features a vast foyer for the multi-purpose hall with an adjoining dressing room. An open staircase from the foyer leads to a tiered auditorium with a capacity of 1,527 seats. The overall geometry of the tiered hall provides very good visibility and acoustics.
