The construction company GEMO a.s. has successfully completed one of today’s largest healthcare projects – the new National Oncology Center at Motol University Hospital and Na Homolce Hospital. Following three years of intensive work, the company delivered the project strictly adhering to the agreed scope and quality standards, leading to the center’s official inauguration on September 9, 2026. This modern complex brings a major advance in the quality and organization of cancer treatment in the Czech Republic.

The new center was created through a sensitive integration of the original building’s reconstruction with modern expansion. The result is a functionally integrated medical complex featuring a central atrium, enclosed walkways, and logically connected operations, ensuring efficient care organization and smooth patient flow across individual specialties. Outpatient and inpatient care, diagnostic departments, operating theaters, research laboratories, and facilities for the development of modern treatment are all concentrated within a single campus,

“From the perspective of scope, technical complexity, and the coordination of individual trades, the National Oncology Center is one of the most complex projects we have been involved in. We greatly appreciate the intensive collaboration with the hospital’s new management and all its expert teams, which made it possible to significantly accelerate construction and complete it within the timeframe required by the investor. Our sincere thanks also go to our employees, subcontractors, and all partners involved in this project, without whose commitment and expertise it would not have been possible to finish such a demanding project on schedule. We are pleased that the new center can now fully serve its purpose and significantly expand oncology care capacity,” says Jaromír Uhýrek, CEO of GEMO a.s.

In terms of technological equipment, the center is among the most advanced facilities in Central Europe. It offers state-of-the-art imaging departments equipped with the latest MRI, CT, mammography, screening, and endoscopy systems. The facility also features modern operating theaters, a highly specialized pharmacy unit for the preparation of anticancer drugs and gene therapies, and cutting-edge research laboratories.

“The completion of the National Oncology Center represents the culmination of an exceptionally demanding project that was successfully delivered strictly adhering to the agreed scope, quality, and schedule. From its launch in 2023, we executed the construction using the Design & Build method, which enabled us to integrate project preparation and construction into a single seamless process. Thanks to this approach, we were able to efficiently align the architectural design, technological requirements, and specific operational needs of a modern medical facility,” says Peter Baulovič, Project Manager at GEMO a.s.

An important part of the project was also creating a peaceful and comfortable environment for both patients and healthcare staff. This is reflected not only in the design of relaxation areas, winter gardens, and green roofs, but also in an extraordinary focus on acoustic insulation. For this reason, selected elevator shafts were constructed as double-walled reinforced concrete structures composed of two independent walls separated by a thick layer of acoustic insulation. Similarly, foundations for noisy technical equipment were designed as acoustically isolated reinforced concrete slabs, preventing the transmission of vibrations and impact noise into the building’s main load-bearing structure.

Modern Pneumatic Tube System Accelerates Sample Transport

The building is connected to a modernized pneumatic tube system that enables the rapid, automated transport of laboratory samples and other materials across the hospital. The new facility houses 27 standard stations alongside a specialized high-capacity node, with carriers reaching speeds of up to 6 m/s. Furthermore, the new dispatch center allows for the prioritization of urgent shipments—such as STAT samples or blood products—ensuring they reach their destination without unnecessary delays.

The building achieves Class A, the highest energy efficiency rating under the Energy Performance Certificate (PENB). Contributing to its energy efficiency is a high-quality insulated and airtight building envelope that meets strict thermal performance standards—for instance, the roof achieves a thermal transmittance (U-value) of 0.12 W/(m²K) and the external wall system 0.18 W/(m²K). The technical infrastructure also features heat recovery from exhaust air and cooling systems, further reducing overall operational energy demand.
