New Construction of the Main Building and Internal Completion of the Low-Threshold Emergency Department, Olomouc

Olomouc

A new building will be erected on the site of the now demolished, 130 year-old hospital structure formerly known as “Franz Josef.” The new facility will consist of five above-ground and three underground floors. The building’s structural system is designed as a spatial reinforced concrete frame with columns and walls. Sustainable features such as a green roof and a photovoltaic power plant are incorporated into the design.

The architectural concept emphasizes both efficiency and aesthetics, while carefully respecting the historical character of the surrounding hospital complex. This new building forms part of a broader redevelopment plan, which includes the future construction of a new maternity pavilion, upgraded access roads, and an underground parking facility.

The new pavilion will house ten central operating theatres, three day-surgery theatres, and three procedure rooms. Specialized departments—including Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care, Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Traumatology—will be relocated to the new building. In total, the facility will offer 273 inpatient beds. A new emergency department will also be integrated into the building, directly connected to existing hospital operations.

Patient comfort was a major consideration in the design. Entrance halls, waiting areas, and interior spaces are intended to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere, complemented by amenities such as a café and a medical equipment dispensary.
