Ostrava, 19th June 2025

Today, the University of Ostrava officially began construction on two new blocks of student residence halls within the Jan Opletal campus in Slezská Ostrava. This project, valued at approximately 740 million CZK (excluding VAT), will provide 663 new beds and addresses the urgent shortage of student accommodation. Completion is planned for June 2027, with the first students moving in that September.

GEMO a.s. was selected as the main contractor for the construction following a public tender. A symbolic hammering of two railway tracks marked the occasion, with participants including university representatives led by Rector Professor Petr Kopecký, the Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region, Ing. Josef Bělica, Ph.D., MBA, the Mayor of Ostrava, Mgr. Jan Dohnal, and the Mayor of Slezská Ostrava, Mgr. Richard Vereš. Representing GEMO at the ceremony was Ing. Ondřej Foukal, Director of the Moravia and Slovakia Division.

“The demand for student housing significantly outweighs our current capacity,” stated Professor Petr Kopecký, Rector of the University of Ostrava. “This project is crucial for the future of the University of Ostrava and Ostrava’s appeal as a modern student city.”

The new buildings will offer modern double rooms with private bathrooms, kitchens, well-equipped study rooms, common rooms, a gym, laundry facilities, and a rooftop terrace. An underground car park will also be built. The project also includes options for barrier-free and family accommodation.

The construction places a strong emphasis on sustainability and low energy consumption. The buildings will feature heat pumps with ground source boreholes, photovoltaic panels, and a system for collecting and utilising rainwater.

The project is being financed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, the Moravian-Silesian Region, the Statutory City of Ostrava, the National Development Bank, and the European agency CINEA. Both the region and the city are contributing 90 million CZK to the construction.
